Tackling Slots

20 September 2022

This won’t bother most slot players; slot machines are random. Of course. The machines are programmed to be random. This way no one can predict what is coming up next or next or next on down the line. I am sure most slot players are aware of this; at least I hope so.

The computer program that makes the machines a random game is called the Random Number Generator. In fact, the more precise name is the Pseudo-Random Number Generator because perfect randomness is a tough thing to create.

Is this of great concern? Not really. Unless the slot player is a computer savant, it would be near impossible (but not quite!) to duplicate the program and get it into the machine. A slot player can dream, players are good at dreams, but we aren’t going to outthink the slot machines’ programming.

[Please note: I heard a story that one man in Canada had done the unthinkable and programmed a computer to duplicate the P-RNG slot program and he won a lot of money. He is now one of the most popular inmates in the prison.]

If you take a look at the amazing amount of money slot machines make for the casinos, it is quite clear that without them the giant casino industry would have stayed in Vegas because there weren’t enough table-game players to support such a giant endeavor cross country. I think most states have casinos and just about all countries have them too – legal ones and illegal ones.

Slot players are the kings and queens of the casino world. Although more women play the slots than men, the percentages are close. No casino game is so close.

Now, is there a way to thwart the machines and take home some money? If you have good luck, which means randomly selecting the right machine and the right time to play it, you can win. No way to plan for that. Put that down to sheer luck, sheer blind luck.

But there are things players can do to reduce the impact of the slot machines on their money. The first, and most obvious, is to reduce the amount of time spent playing the machines.

If you usually play six hours a day, reduce that to four hours per day and reduce your potential losses by a third over extended periods of time. Just slow down how fast you play and that will help you reduce the hit on your bankroll. You could even stay at the machines for your normal amount of time but stop the machine from ravishing you.

Play better paying machines, ones that are not connected to other machines in order to build up the jackpots. Such progressive machines have high house edges in order to create those big jackpots. This we know. This we want to avoid.

Will the machines change how they pay out? No. They are what they are. You will be facing a house edge but you will be giving those machines less to take from you. Yes, that is a good thing.

Okay, you may get less in comps but that is trivial. A strong reduction in playing time will benefit you more than any comps.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
