Stranger than stranger22 March 2016
And stranger than stranger was this stupid stranger who tried to step over the dead man to get the corpse’s spot at the table! I kid you not. The stranger was stopped until the poor player’s lifeless body was removed from the table. The good news (sort of, kind of) concerning this situation was that the dead man went out a winner.
At first I thought she was making a bold sexual move but she didn’t stop sliding. She went down my leg and wound up a senseless heap on the floor. The EMTs came within a minute and gave her oxygen (I think it was oxygen). The pit boss said, “She does this on occasion. When she’s sober she is a really nice lady.” When the pit boss walked away the dealer said, “I saw her sober once about five years ago.”
I didn’t have a big roll. I really didn’t have much of a roll at all. I took the dice, immediately established a number; the guy threw out his arsenal of wagers and then I sevened out. Bingo! Just like that. “Let’s see if you can have a better roll,” he said. “Pass him the dice again.” I took the dice. Today, after more than 25 years of play, I would not take the dice. I would have smiled, said something like “it’s not my day” and scurried out of there. I was shook and I knew I was shook. But way back then? Well, yes, I took the dice. I sevened out on the second roll again. I picked up some of my chips off the rack. “Wait guy,” said the amazingly rich stranger, “here’s a chip for your efforts” and he threw me a red chip. I slunk out of the casino. (Have you had some strange experiences in casinos? E-mail me at fscobe@optonline.net and tell me about it. It or they could wind up in a future article.)
