Stranger than stranger

22 March 2016

I am sure most of my readers have had deliriously, weirdly, fearsomely, funny and ironic experiences in the casinos. Here are some of mine:

  • He died. The tall, monstrously fat guy at the craps table who was yelling and hooting and clapping and wildly cheering went silent; his big bloated face turning beet red with his eyes bugging out and then — clunk! bam! down he went to the ground. He was still. He was dead.

The game paused for a moment and my mentor the Captain protected the guy’s chips as medics rushed onto the scene. But the gargantuan guy was gone.

And stranger than stranger was this stupid stranger who tried to step over the dead man to get the corpse’s spot at the table! I kid you not. The stranger was stopped until the poor player’s lifeless body was removed from the table.

The good news (sort of, kind of) concerning this situation was that the dead man went out a winner.

  • She was blind drunk, a streak of spittle rolling down her chin. I had never met her before; she was an amorous though disgusting stranger trying to pick me up — with my wife right there sitting next to me at the blackjack table!

“I loaf yoo my mand,” she croaked — oh, yeah, did I mention (?) that she was really ugly with that weather-beaten skin that had seen way too many suntans and a body that had inhaled way too many cigarettes? “Less haf sooom fuuun,” she said as she started sliding down my leg.

At first I thought she was making a bold sexual move but she didn’t stop sliding. She went down my leg and wound up a senseless heap on the floor. The EMTs came within a minute and gave her oxygen (I think it was oxygen).

The pit boss said, “She does this on occasion. When she’s sober she is a really nice lady.”

When the pit boss walked away the dealer said, “I saw her sober once about five years ago.”

  • I was embarrassed. I was at a craps table with an amazingly rich (I figured he was amazingly rich) craps player who was betting maybe 50 thousand a roll — maybe even more because I didn’t want to stare at his betting choices and count how much they came to.

He bet every bad bet in the book (I could hear him calling them out) and he was boisterous and a big tipper. I figured if I had a long roll he might throw me an orange or brown chip for making him so much money! My early craps training in the Atlantic City of the early 1990s taught me that some high rollers will do that, you know. But this was Vegas; one of my first trips to Sin City.

I didn’t have a big roll. I really didn’t have much of a roll at all. I took the dice, immediately established a number; the guy threw out his arsenal of wagers and then I sevened out. Bingo! Just like that.

“Let’s see if you can have a better roll,” he said. “Pass him the dice again.”

I took the dice. Today, after more than 25 years of play, I would not take the dice. I would have smiled, said something like “it’s not my day” and scurried out of there. I was shook and I knew I was shook. But way back then? Well, yes, I took the dice.

I sevened out on the second roll again. I picked up some of my chips off the rack. “Wait guy,” said the amazingly rich stranger, “here’s a chip for your efforts” and he threw me a red chip.

I slunk out of the casino.
