Stick to the best bets at craps28 January 2014
How do you bet? In other words if I place $5 down on pass line, shoot and and point is 8 how much should I put behind for odds? Also is it a good idea to bet at the same time the 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10 which I believe is a $27.00 bet for all of those at one time? What about the hard ways? Should one bet on the hard ways, $1, $2, $5 each or what? How about the horn bets? How many times should one put up $5 for a horn? When I play and play the horn bet for $5, I usually say $5 horn, I'll parlay and split for dealers. Is this a good idea or should I just tip them? The dealers where I have learned like the horn bet and parlay and split. FYI, I did do that recently and we each (the dealers go $60.00 or so each)? When a shooter calls off his bet because he has a hunch he will roll a seven, how does this affect the psyche of the other players? I did that last Sunday — called off my bets, hit a seven after my point and kept my money. Fortunately, there was only one other player who lost her money when I hit that seven. Do you ever play hunches, like you know you are going to hit a seven or have that feeling you will hit 11 or 12? I also prefer to lob the dice instead of throwing them sideways. What numbers would you place when lobbing the dice? For instance, maybe the dice show a three or another five. What do you prefer? I’ll try it next time I play. FRANK RESPONDS: If I were betting $5 on the pass line and established a point of eight I would take $25 in odds. I would, however, place all the other numbers. The house edge is just too much on the 4, 5, 9 and 10. You’d be throwing your money away. Now let me go through the list. Forget the hardways, again the house edge is quite large and you are asking for trouble on these bets. The horn is a total sucker bet which is markedly worse than even the hardways. Only ploppies make horn bets. The best bets for the dealers are the best bets for you. Just put up a six or eight for $6 and tell the dealers that you are controlling the bet. That means if the bet wins the dealers can only take the winnings as the initial bet stays on the layout. This way if you have a hot hand they win their bet over and over. In a random game of craps it doesn’t matter if the shooter calls off his bets. It might scare some of the other players but in fact the game is random and the seven has a 17 percent chance of showing up on any roll. I would strongly recommend that you learn how to use the 5-Count which will lower how many random rolls you bet on. In short, it will save you money. Just play the pass line with full odds (or what you can afford in odds) and make one come bet with odds. That should be enough to give you the excitement of craps play. Hunches? Nope.
