Stay Safe19 July 2022
“The virus has put a damper on many of my enjoyable activities but you have to be safe. I am very lucky that no one close to me got the virus. We wear masks and socially distance when we go somewhere,” stated Marjorie. “But I must say I was anxious to get back to the casinos when they opened.” Casinos instituted various methods for keeping their players safe. There were see-through plexiglass screens separating this slot player from that slot player. There was six feet of social distancing between people checking in and the reservation clerks were behind plexiglass shields. “I didn’t mind any of the rules,” said Kit. “You want to play and you follow the rules. It was kind of like going to school. I was good in school and I was good in the casino. I actually won some money!” Stephanie said: “Wearing masks was mandatory. That’s just like playing the right strategy for your preferred machine. All of that made sense to me. No sense taking unnecessary risks when enjoying your favorite pastime. Players were indeed enthusiastic as they got back into the swing of things. I know I was.” The United States and Canada have tens of millions of people who love going to casinos and the Covid-19 virus made that impossible for many, many months. I know many players who were anxious to get back into the action. Once you get used to the thrill of playing it is very hard to take a step back and do nothing. NANCY: “Obviously, the pandemic and its effects on our society were serious issues. Casinos had to be closed and proper attention to the safety of the public was the most important thing. I used to read and watch movies about threatening viruses but for the life of me I never thought I would live in such a world. I guess I was blind to it. It took me totally by surprise.” So what did players do when they were in lockdown or self-lockdown or when all the casinos they would go to were not go-to-able? Some tried to fill in with other activities such as binge-watching television shows or movies. “I saw every movie that had prequels or sequels. After awhile even doing that was kind of boring,” stated Dennis. Here are some more words from more players: SHEILA: "Oh, this was not fun at all. I would say that dining out and casino play are my two favorite things and I could do both when I went to my favorite casinos. Not during the pandemic. I found the whole thing very frustrating. I knew people who got sick so I wasn’t foolish enough to try to pretend life was just the same. It sure wasn’t." MARJORIE: "My biggest leisure time activity is to go to the casinos and play slots. I do not live too far from Atlantic City and I actually went down and walked the boardwalk, just to get a glimpse of the casinos and to breathe the ocean air. Actually, it was me and a few of my casino friends. It felt almost like a party." KIT: "Okay, I tried the online slot machines but overall you just can’t replace a real casino. The energy in a casino is a lot different than the energy at home sitting in your den or living room playing on a computer. I even tried sports betting but I was not geared for that like my husband is. I didn’t want to actually watch the games so it was kind of like playing the lottery without any really big jackpots. Truth to say, I found the sports betting unsatisfying." JOHNNY: "I think I was first in line to get into the casino when it first opened. I play slots, video poker and some table games. I felt like a kid in a candy store. There were people there when I went but obviously the casino had maybe twenty-five percent capacity. It just wasn’t the same thing as normal but it was getting there. Everyone was friendly and everyone seemed to want to joke about the coronavirus. Were there any people who took off their masks? Nope. Not that I could see. Security was all over the place. It was a fun day!" AMY: I just want to get back to normal. Our lives have been shaken. I have three nurses and two doctors in our family and they are the front-line workers. I think the casinos should have a special for when they open fully that gives these people free rooms and meals as a thank you to them." This has been a tough time for civilization and I do believe we are all looking forward to getting back to normal…if we ever can get back to normal. I think the casinos will be a bellwether for telling us where we are as a society. All the best in and out of the casinos! Frank Scoblete’s web site is www.frankscoblete.com.
