Blackjack players must play the correct computer-derived basic strategy. Most casino gift shops will have basic strategy cards that give excellent advice on how to play the various hands you get versus the dealer’s up card. Do not rely on your instincts or trends or anything other than playing your hand correctly. Blackjack players, please be aware that the decisions made by other players will not add or subtract from your expectation. Sometimes if another player plays his or her cards incorrectly you might win when you hit and get a 5 on your 16 against a dealer’s 9 up card. Other times, you might get a 6. There is no known order of the cards that any player is disturbing. If there were, you’d know exactly what would be coming up next. Blackjack basic strategy players should look for the best rules. That means blackjacks pay 3-to-2; dealer stands on soft 17; players can double on any first two cards; players can split and resplit pairs. Blackjack players who are not card counters should play at games with shallow cuts and full tables. The slower the game, the better for you, and talkative dealers help to make the game go slowly. Also, social players are a big plus. Blackjack basic strategy players should never take insurance. It’s a sucker bet. Craps players, don’t get caught up in the controlled riot that is a craps game. Get caught up in the explosive emotions and you might start betting all the wrong bets with high house edges. Craps is a game where it is extremely easy to lose your discipline. Craps players should stick to making the best percentage bets, and those bets are the pass with odds and come with odds. If you are a darkside player, a don’t pass with odds and a don’t come with odds. Craps players, consider only making one bet per shooter. Every bet you make on a craps table is another game against the house. Bet on three numbers and you are tripling your losing expectation. It is very hard for many craps players to see the sense in this because they are what casinos call “action players.” That is good for the casinos; not so good for the players. “Action” to the casino means a player who is willing to throw a lot of money out there. Craps players should always use the Captain’s 5-Count. It will usually save you because you will only be betting on 43% of the random rolls. Do not extend your time at the tables because you are saving money. Both blackjack and craps players should tip the dealers. Always tip on top of your bet at blackjack by telling the dealer, “The chip on top is a tip.” Do not put the tip on the layout because a win means the dealer will take that chip along with his win. Putting the tip on top means he takes only the win and you can continue to use the same chip on the next round without it costing you more. In craps, you can tip a number of ways. But on any tip, you must say, “I control the bet.” That means they can only take the win and not the original bet. Again this allows them to win on subsequent rolls without you having to spend more money. Okay, may 2016 be your year!
