Should I Jump on the Bandwagon at the Craps Table?

30 December 2006

Dear Frank:

When I play craps, I typically play the pass line, and buy the 6 and 8. Pretty simple stuff. I have a question about betting etiquette/karma. If a shooter gets on a hot streak and, for example, is rolling a lot of hard ways or 5s, is it bad form to start jumping in on those bets after they hit it several times?

Is jumping in on the "bandwagon" considered bard form/karma? Or it is every man for themselves, and I should bet on those numbers, and hope the streak continues?

Thanks,
Michael

Dear Michael:

Your normal way of playing craps is actually quite good. The pass line bet has a 1.41 percent house edge and the placing of the 6 and 8 each has a 1.52 percent house edge. You are giving the house a small shot at your money.

On shooters who are merely random rollers, there is no truth to the idea that a hot roll will continue or that the numbers he has been hitting will continue to hit. The stupid saying "see a horn, bet a horn" is believed in by idiots who have no understanding of the randomness of the game. Don't waste your money on those hardwways where the house edge hovers around 10 percent or on the 5 and 9 where the house edge is at 4 percent. What happened with that shooter in the past is no indication of what will happen to him on the next roll or the rolls after that. There is no predictability in randomness.
