29 March 2000

Dear Frank,

I'm reading your excellent book Beat The Craps Out Of The Casino, which I ordered from Amazon.com last week, and I have two important questions regarding the Captain's 5-Count:

1. You write, "On the fifth roll, which from now on we'll call the '5-Count,' the shooter must again roll a point number 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 for the count to be completed." Does this mean that if the fifth roll isn't a point number, I must begin the count over again? Or do I simply keep holding at "4-count" if the shooter throws 2, 3, 11 or 12 on the fifth (or subsequent) rolls?

In other words, if I'm at 4-count and the shooter throws a 12 on the fifth roll, then a point number on the sixth roll, have I achieved the 5-Count?

2. If I reach the 5-Count at the same time a shooter makes his point, and on his next come-out roll he throws 7, what do I do? You write that when a shooter "sevens out the count is terminated." But if a shooter rolls seven on the come-out roll, he hasn't "sevened out"; he's still the shooter. I have a good idea what you might answer, but I want to be certain. I can't wait to begin trying this system on my computer craps game (and of course, actual casino play), but I want to make sure I'm playing the Captain's way!

I would be so grateful if you could respond.

Sincerely,
Charles

P.S. I also purchased Walter Thomason's new book on blackjack from Amamzon.com, but I wanted to read about the Captain first! I also enjoy your articles in Casino Player magazine; in fact, I named you my favorite "gaming personality" in their "Best of Gaming" survey.

Dear Charles:

If the fifth roll is not a point number, you are at the 4-Count and holding until a point number is rolled. So if the fifth roll is a 12 and the sixth is a 4, you have completed the 5-Count. If a series of non-point numbers show -- you're still holding. If the 5-Count is completed with the shooter's actual point being made, you play the game. After the Come-Out roll, your bets are working and you're at risk. Do not keep the bets working on the Come-Out as some rhythmic rollers go for the seven on the Come-Out and that could hurt you. The next issue of my magazine The New Chance and Circumstance has an article by Sharpshooter about just such dice control. This issue will be available the first week of spring.

As far as Walter Thomason's Twenty-First Century Blackjack book is concerned -- the man has hit a responsive chord in the gaming public as this book is currently the number one best-selling gambling book in the country.

As to the Casino Player poll -- so you're the one who voted for me!

All the best in and out of the casinos!
