But how many players play blackjack properly? In order to answer that question, you have to know the answer to this question: How many players know the computer derived basic strategy for the play of every player’s hand versus every dealer’s up card? While I can’t answer that question definitively, I can say from my 30 years of play that many players will play a form of basic strategy, leaving out some critical plays because they “feel” or “don’t think” those plays are the proper ones in a given situation. Feeling or thinking off the cuff is probably the worst way to play blackjack even though a player thinks it feels right. Sadly, there are many supposed gambling experts who “feel” and “think” they know the correct basic strategy and these folks give the players the absolutely wrong advice. Too many players listen to these experts who give them the wrong way to go in the game and they get lost as in they lose more money than they should. So, the “almost basic strategy” players are adding to the casinos’ edge at the game; some of them quite a lot too. [Please note: Here’s a little wrinkle; since there are many different blackjack games with many different numbers of decks and different rules, the computer-designed basic strategy has to be modified for each type of game. But here is a nice “but,” you can play one because the difference among them is not that great. You can also bring a basic strategy card to read.] What are the common errors that “almost basic strategy players [ABSPlayer]” make?
