Players' Salaries25 June 2024
My friend above is looking at comps in the wrong way. Here is how he should look at those compensations. They are the salary for the players. Yes, indeed, the casinos’ “players compensation” is the salary casinos pay players for those players to play the games. Obviously not all players are worth the casinos paying them – or not paying them enough to cause them to praise those casinos. But most casinos will have comps that are worth the money to pay most of their players. Those “comps” as players call them are very, very important in order to keep the players coming back for more. I call this casino activity a “salary” because many players are drawn to casinos that give out the money more freely than do other casinos. More players get something in compensation than do other players and some players actually hunt around to find the casinos that give them decent salaries for their betting styles. Casino comps are given based on how much a player plays in terms of time spent at the tables and/or machines, money spent on the games overall, the players’ strategies, how often the player returns to that casino. All these factors are taken into consideration and a “salary” is doled out to that player based on a general formula which includes that the list I listed above. I call the comps a salary because it is indeed a salary based on a statistical analysis of what that player will lose over time playing how that player plays. It is based not on a job requirement per se but on the overall action the player gives the casino. Think of it as the casino “tipping” the player; much as a patron tipping a waiter, hair stylist, valet parker or other workers who get tipped. Heck, thinking of comps as tips for the players is the way to go. Of course, the players’ tips are based on their potential losses. It does take effort to play the games being offered, however, and the casinos are more than happy to offer such tips for the time a player takes playing the games. In the good “ole” days the “power of the pen” – meaning a host who could dictate comping amounts – was the predominant form of deciding who got tipped was the norm. Today, that is not really the case. The formulas for casinos tipping are restrictive and more money needs to be wagered in today’s casinos – especially the more popular ones. I guess you can say that the players’ salaries are going down in general. But isn’t that always the way of things? All the best in and out of the casinos.
