Some players are just looking to break even. To them that would be a win of sorts. Those who wish they could break even on the machines are legion. They make up almost the full population of slot and casino-games players. Why? Because all players (or almost all players!) know that they are playing against a casino edge over them. Players don’t want to lose their money, be it on a machine or at a table game or in any activity in life. If a person wanted to lose, well, there would be something off about that person. Going to the casino to lose money? No way! The dream is to win and, maybe, win some more and, maybe, win bigger and even bigger than ever. Slot players’ dreams can be mighty large – so can any casino player’s dream. But slot players can have life-changing fantasies and many do. For a few coins millions can be won and on rare occasions some players have been blessed with huge wins. The sad fact is that almost all casino players, be they slot players, video-poker players, and table-game players are certain to lose. If not tonight, then over some period of time; a short time, a long time, an in-between time. There are very few players who can say that they are ahead of the slots after playing for many moons. The house edge is just too much to beat except occasionally. Bottom line is that the house edge beats the player. That’s the math. That’s the truth. The exceptions are a lucky few who have hit monster jackpots that set them up for life. What are these edges? On some video poker machines they can be as low as about one percent all the way up to 10 percent. On slots you can probably start at five percent and go up to 15 to 17 percent. Those edges are really (really, really, really) large. You play against one of those large ones and you are asking for trouble. This dreaded fact is also true of playing the state lotteries that are offered in stationary stores, supermarkets and liquor stores among others. The house edges on lottery tickets are immense, far greater than on most slot and video poker machines. We should all chew on that fact. Still, when a big jackpot is being offered on lottery games there are sometimes long lines of players ready to play. Hope and prayer is the coin of the realm when it comes to such games. The casino probably has more prayers said per minute than most religious institutions. All the best in and out of the casinos! Frank Scoblete’s web site is www.frankscoblete.com.
