John 'Skinny's' 'How to win as a dice controller'

26 August 2012

[This column by John “Skinny” was a post on my private website and message boards.]

We often think you need a monster roll to make money at the craps tables. But that is not the case. It is the moderate rolls that occur more frequently. We need to have discipline at the tables, a good betting method that compliments our game and a plan for how long to stay in order to make a profit. I hope my description of my recent experiences can be helpful to some of you.

After the dice control class we recently held in Atlantic City, I played a total of six craps sessions. The longest session was a little over 1 hour and the shortest was 15 minutes. I think I played around six hours in total over the six sessions. I shot the dice roughly three or fewer times each session and only once in the short session. I follow the advice we give in our Golden Touch dice control class concerning the length of time to stay at the table and number of times you want to shoot the dice per session.

Here are my results:

Session #1
20 roll
13 roll
27 roll

Session #2
8 roll
25 roll
18 roll

Session #3
7 roll
9 roll
27 roll

Session #4
13 roll

Session #5
23 roll
10 roll
17 roll

Session #6
11 roll
4 roll
12 roll

You will notice I had no extremely long rolls in those days. You will also notice I did not take a lot of turns with the dice at any single session. Other shooters did not have any huge rolls while I was at the tables.

In addition to those five sessions, I had that one 15-minute session I mentioned above. I shot the dice once in that session for a 13 roll with nine sixes. Frank Scoblete and Jerry “Stickman” (my playing friends) shot once and then we called it quits for the session. We were feeling a bit tired and still full from lunch. We had a profit and there was no reason to continue playing if we were not at our peak fitness level.

I made money in five sessions and lost in only one out of the six sessions I played. But I did not have any extremely long rolls, nor was I at the tables with someone else who did. My money-making rolls for those 6 sessions were 13, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27 and 27. That is not a lot of long rolls. But with discipline and a good game plan, it was enough to turn a profit.

Using the 5-Count (even on other controlled shooters), not betting on any random rollers and quitting after limiting my time and number of throws at the tables were major factors in my making a modest profit. I had a consistent throw while shooting with at least one moderate money-making roll each session. But it is because I know my game and bet accordingly that I was able to make a profit with only a handful of moderate rolls.

These are the keys to playing a solid advantage-play game.
