Interview with a Blackjack Bully

21 July 2020

I think this column will be a first for any gambling writer. That’s right; I am going to interview a blackjack bully.

Blackjack players and other gambling writers have often decried those blackjack bullies who feel free to give other players advice. Worse, such blackjack bullies will often harangue other players if they feel these other players are screwing up the game and causing the bully to lose. On rare occasions it can get quite ugly.

Although such bullying does not happen at every table or blackjack game, we have all experienced it. Good players will experience it a lot more because most blackjack bullies have developed their own concept of basic strategy and many also claim to know what cards are about to come out of the deck or shoe. That latter can set them on edge big time if the third baseman makes the “wrong” call.

FRANK: I noticed that you will tell other players how to play their hands. Does that help the game?

BULLY: You got to admit that most people do not know how to play the game. They make idiot moves and those moves affect all of the rest of the players at the table. Bad players can change a good game into a bad game based on their decisions. The whole game can change because of a bad player.

FRANK: Is a bad third baseman the worst? You seemed to get him a lot in the game we just played.

BULLY: Oh, yeah, a moron at third base can screw us all. That guy hit a twelve against the dealer’s two. He got a ten and busted. The dealer turns over a ten undercard and now has a twelve and he hits his twelve and gets a nine! Had the dopey third baseman just stayed on his twelve we all would have won.

FRANK: But you didn’t tell him in advance what was going to happen.

BULLY: Yes, I did. As he signaled for a hit I realized he would bust and I waved my hand “no!” But he didn’t even see me.

FRANK: So you can tell in advance what cards will come out of the deck?

BULLY: At the last second. I can’t tell before that but at that last second I can tell most of the time and if that third baseman would just listen to me we could win a lot more hands.

FRANK: Do any players get annoyed with you for telling them what to do?

BULLY: Yeah, the true idiots. They claim they are playing with their money and they can make any decisions they like. That’s nonsense because they are playing with my money too and when they make a wrong decision I lose my money. So they are playing for me and my money too. They don’t seem to realize that fact.

FRANK: Do you think you would be ahead of the game if players were as smart as you?

BULLY: I am not ahead of the game and I blame the poor players for that fact. Everyone at the table has to know what to do, especially the third baseman.

FRANK: Do you ever play third base?

BULLY: Yes, of course, but the problem for me at third base is that some other player makes a dumb move and that changes the course of the game as well.

FRANK: Sounds as if it is extremely hard to win at this game.

BULLY: You’re telling me? It sure is.

FRANK: So why do you play it?

BULLY: I don’t play craps because I don’t like standing at the table and craps players are too loud a lot of the time. Roulette is boring. Slots are fixed against the players.

FRANK: Isn’t every game fixed because the house has the edge.

BULLY: Not blackjack. It is a fifty/fifty game. You make the right decisions and you can win at that game but our players don’t know that and play so poorly.

FRANK: I thought the game was 48 wins for the casino and 44 for the players with the players having options to increase their bets or get paid three to two on their blackjacks.

BULLY: No. It’s fifty/fifty.

FRANK: What about those players who use a basic strategy card that tells them what the right move is for their hands?

BULLY: Those cards are nonsense. They are made by the casinos so players make the wrong choices on important hands. I never trusted those cards. You can buy them in the casino gift shop. I mean, come on, really?

FRANK: Well, I wish you all the best in and out of the casinos!

BULLY: Thanks.
