How should I bet the don't?

24 December 2011

Dear Frank:

I usually play a steady bet on the don't pass line, and maximum odds bet on it. But I can't find a solid strategy for the don't come bets. Some people say to always have three points going at any given time (the come-out point, and two points from your don't come bets). When I do this, almost every roll kills a point, and I have to make another don't come bet to replace it. I use up all my money replacing points, so when I finally roll a 7 I don't benefit from it. It happens just enough to make me feel like I'm not sure what I'm doing. I'm wondering if the best thing is for me to just place the don't pass line with max odds, and ignore the don't come.

Can you make a few comments on how much to make don't come bets? Is it a viable strategy to "always have X number of points playing at any given time"?

Thanks a heap,
Ron M.

Dear Ron:

First, no matter how you slice it, you are playing against a house edge. So your long-term expectation is to lose; sad but true. However, I think I can give you some advice that might help to ultimately keep those losses low.

Skip playing the pass line bet. I'll explain in a moment why. Just go up on one don't come bet. If the bet gets on a number, take odds, but that is it. Do not place any more don't come bets or any other bets. On the initial placement if the shooter rolls a seven, you will lose but the shooter has sevened out. The next shooter has the dice and you wait again to make a don't come bet.

On the initial placement of the don't come, if the shooter rolls an 11, you will lose but the shooter will keep the dice. DO NOT place another bet against this shooter.

The rule is one bet against one shooter -- no more than that; one bet, one shooter. I prefer doing this on the don't come rather than the don't pass because the shooter can keep rolling if he keeps hitting sevens during the come-out roll and the inclination will be to keep putting up don't pass bets. So skip the don't pass and just go with one don't come, with odds.

When you play against a house edge, the more bets you make, the more money the casino will win from you. That's why I prefer just one bet.
