How often are dice changed?28 October 2007
Dear Mike: You've hit upon a very important aspect of dice practice and dice control. When you are shooting those dice they are at various stages in their "life-expectancy." The more the dice have been used, the less sharp the edges; while new dice will have very sharp edges and tips. Sharp is good for a competent dice controller because the dice will be easier to handle since they won't slide as "older" dice will because they have been pared down by use. Here are general answers to your questions. 1. How often are they changed out in a casino? Answer: Dice are changed between four and eight hours. 2. How often should you change them out if you are practicing at home? Answer: About 2,000 rolls. 3. When practicing at home, if you are tracking your throws, what is the optimal number of throws before retiring those dice? Answer: About 2,000 rolls. 4. Will statistical analysis of your tracked throws help you point to that "optimal retirement time"? Answer: If you divide the dice throws into quadrants of 25 percent or 12.5 percent of 2,000 throws --- you check what your SRR is at each 25 (or 12.5) percent mark. So after 25 percent are finished your SRR is X:6; now 26 percent to 50 percent that SRR is X:6, and so on. If you find that, over time, your SRR is much higher with the sharper dice (chances are it will be), you might want to jump into games where the dice have just been replaced. In practice I would get used to playing with dice at different stages in their "life times." But junk them after about 2,000 rolls.
