How did Frank Scoblete get so smart about blackjack?20 July 2008
Dear Jimmy: It wasn't easy — but it isn't easy for anyone, I guess. When I first went to a casino in the mid-1980s, I watched a blackjack game and realized that if all the aces came out there couldn't be a blackjack. I thought there must be a way to beat this game. I thought this was an original idea too! I had no idea that dozens of truly brilliant men had already paved the way with various card counting techniques to beat blackjack. When I got home from the casino I threw myself into a complete study of blackjack — for six months I read everything written about the game; great books, crazy books; articles by brilliant men and complete fools. My wife and I learned the Hi-Lo counting system and then I headed to the casinos with my wife, the beautiful A.P. In those days Atlantic City had some very good four-deck games, and for nine days we hammered the casinos. I thought if this kept up we would own a casino in a short period of time. We then went back the following month for a 16-day trip and . . . I've written extensively about this . . . I got my ass kicked and lost everything I had won and the $5,000 I had saved to be a blackjack player. After that my wife and I really learned the ropes by playing in Las Vegas and Atlantic City as a team. So I first started with book learning, then I went into the wars and I've been in the wars for two decades now. I've had a fun career at blackjack. I've met many of the great modern experts as well. So my "smarts" come from studying and extensive playing. For your letter, short though it was, I am giving you a free 10-day subscription to my private website at www.goldentouchcraps.com. We have over 5,000 members on this private, members-only web site and you will find the conversations intelligent, interesting and fun. Enjoy! All the best in and out of the casinos!
