How can I practice shooting in craps?

16 May 2010

Hi Frank:

Thanks for your responses to my e-mails. I have started a 401G [a gambling bank account] and it will take a while but I think I can do it. You have changed my way of thinking about the game. I really never understood how much the house really gets . . . ugh! Those fire bets . . . unbelievable.

So I called Foxwoods and asked them about rating, etc. Then I asked them for a private game and how does that process work. He said it is a minimum $250 pass line bet every time. You would need like 10K to play like that. I said thank you very much, I won't be doing that anytime soon.

I am reading your books. I love the stories. I am so sorry to hear about your friend "the Captain" passing [the Captain passed away on February 10, 2010]. What an amazing human being. I loved your story on his 147-roll hand that just must have been unbelievable.

Your books are very educational. I am learning a lot. I bought some dice, they say they are casino dice but they are very sharp, not rounded edges; so I will have to sand them or something. I also have the green felt to practice on.

So I have a few questions, of course, I always have questions. Where can I practice? How do you create a practice box?

What does it mean when you say "you are to the right or left of the stickman"? I understand where the stickmen are located, but are you at the each end (to the right or left)?

My problem is that if I am right next to the stick man like right in the middle it is hard to throw if you are right handed. I usually try for the end.

I am going to try to make it to one off your Golden Touch dice control classes, but I am not sure If I can do the one in March 20 and 21st in Atlantic City. I will try for Las Vegas on June 26 and 27.

Any thoughts to playing on-line and which website is the best for that?

Thanks again for all your advice.

Mary

Dear Mary:

Sharp-edged dice are the casino dice. Rounded edges are for board games and the like. So you have the right dice. You can buy a practice box from Golden Touch Craps [http://www.goldentouchcraps.com/rigs.shtml] or you can make one yourself. Don't ask me how because if it isn't held together with duct tape and can be cut with a steak knife I am at a loss. On our private members-only site, some people have made their own and they might be able to help you.

Stick left #1 (SL1) or Stick right #1 (SR1) are right next to the stickman — you could hold his hand. SL2 and SR2 are next over. You'd have to reach to hold his hand. These are the preferred positions. If you are right-handed, then the best position for you is SL1 — meaning you'd hold his hand with your right hand and your shot would be a relaxed pendulum swing. In a pinch you can go to SL2.

Shooting from the end of the table can be done by some elite shooters — and I do mean elite — but it is not recommended for you or any novice shooter.

Online games are strictly random and you can't get an edge over them so I would drop them from my thinking if you wish to be an advantage player.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
