Getting the Mathematical Edge on the Dark Side

11 August 2007

Dear Frank:

I returned from Vegas all pumped as I love playing craps. I bought your book Forever Craps after returning home and read it cover to cover in about two sittings. It's a great read.

Just one area of confusion for me. On page 112, getting the mathematical edge on the dark side of the line, it reads that you are paying the guy $33 bucks for a chance to win $30 and calling it a good bet. Am I missing something here? Are you going to take odds (which I think waters down your advantage)?

Thanks for writing great books. I'll be reading others.

Dan

Dear Dan:

I am glad you liked my book as it has the complete bio of the Captain - the greatest craps player whoever lived and the owner of the World Record for the longest roll in terms of how many numbers he hit before sevening out - an awesome 147.

On the buying of these darkside 6 and 8 numbers from someone who is squeamish about keeping them up because he thinks he doesn't have a big enough edge, it goes like this.

He has a $30 don't come bet on a number already. He will get paid even money if the bet hits. The true odds would have given him just $25 if he was being paid based on how often a 6 hits (five times) and how often a 7 hits (six times). So if you buy the bet from this guy for $33, you get paid that 30 dollars. The true bet would have been 36 dollars to win $30 so you are pocketing three dollars more than normal. You have an edge buying the bet from him for 33 dollars because the odds now favor you.

I think the confusion comes in when I mention the $27.50 as the true odds on $30 dollars. If you were betting $30, using the real odds, the bet would have paid $25 - you paid only half of what the bet is worth by analogy. It was confusing that I wrote it that way. So I would stick with what I said above and jump over the confusing part in the book. I think I actually over-wrote that section - something we writers sometimes do.

For your excellent question I am giving you a free month on my private web site www.goldentouchcraps.com. There are 5,000 members and the conversations are lively.

All the best in and out of the casinos.
