R.D. Ellison gives his prescription for successful casino play in his new book Gamble to Win: A Complete Guide for the Serious Player [Lyle Stuart]. It consists of understanding the games, the nature of the odds you face, the difference between good and bad games, what to play and when to play them. Ellison advocates various "trend-spotting" techniques to decide at which tables (good games only) to play. While no trend-finding or betting system can give the player a mathematical advantage, neither can it do the player any harm. Ellison has some interesting advice concerning discerning patterns and he is a believer that past events have some bearing on future events in casino games. He offers advice on how to maximize player wins and minimize player losses. He covers most of the popular games in the casinos and gives a personal account of several days of play in Atlantic City using his own techniques.

Although there are no real "advantage" techniques to be found in its pages, the book is well-written. It is a volume geared to the general gaming public and not to those casino players looking to get a mathematical edge or an historical perspective. Ellison belongs to a category of gaming writer -- of which Lyle Stuart is the epitome -- who uses his wealth of personal experience to build a model of attack on the casinos.

Gamble to Win: A Complete Guide for the Serious Player retails for $24.95 and is available at bookstores or on the Internet.
