Do You Want the Golden Touch at Craps? Part Two

6 July 2006

With the exception of the odds bet, every bet at craps has a house edge. Even with the odds bet, you must make a first bet that has a house edge to be eligible to place the odds behind it. The math of craps is hard-bodied and cannot be beaten by betting systems, trend-finding systems, progressive systems and the like. No one can out-think the game of craps; no one can out-intuit the game of craps; no one can win at the game of craps - if the game is played as theory suggests.

If you play craps the way the casino desires you to play craps, you will be a long-term loser. If you make small house-edge bets, you will lose less than if you make high house-edge bets. But the bottom line for both types of bets is the same, just different in scale; the player loses.

The typical craps player rolls the dice in such a way that the game is strictly random, like a slot machine. In such a random game, the house wins more decisions on the Pass Line and Come bets. While on the Place Bets, the house pays less than the true odds of the wager. Either method adds up to one thing - the house ultimately wins the money and the player ultimately loses the money.

However, there is another element to craps, an element first brought out by the greatest craps player of all time, a man known as the Captain. This element is called rhythmic rolling or controlled shooting. The Captain maintained that certain players had the ability to alter the nature of the game of craps by their rolls. A good roller could change the game to favor himself. The Captain asserted this to be a fact since he constantly played with the world's greatest dice controller, a woman known as the Arm. The Arm and the Captain were the first modern-day, casino dice controllers. (You can read about both of them in my book The Craps Underground: The Inside Story of How Dice Controllers are Winning Millions from the Casinos!)

According to Dominator, one of the world's greatest dice controllers, "the game of craps is unique because the casino gives you two dice and says, 'Come on, try to beat us.' You get to roll the dice. How you roll the dice is up to you. And what do the players do? Most players just take the dice and fling them down to the end of the table, while some set the dice carefully and then fling them. For just about all players, the game of craps is random and unbeatable."

But is the game random and unbeatable for all players, or is the Captain right?

Howard "Rock 'n Roller" Newman, another star of the dice control world, states, "The Captain's theory is absolutely correct. When you are given the dice, you can use a throw that changes the game to favor you. Such a throw is not easy to master but it can be done with work."

Dominator adds, "Craps is a game that can be beaten by doing two things. First, you have to learn a controlled throw. This is something that does take practice and work. The good dice controllers practice several days a week and some, including me, practice every single day. Once you have a controlled throw, you must learn how to bet properly. Too many players make such poor betting choices that no amount of dice control can save them from losing in the long run."

I have had the pleasure of playing craps with both the Captain and the Arm in the 1980s and 1990s and I got to watch their exploits first hand. Although the Arm is now retired from the world of craps shooting because of severe arthritis, the Captain, an octogenarian, still plays at least once a week and still utilizes his classic throw.

So how can you learn to beat the game of craps? There are several roads you can take in learning to beat the game of craps. Most players will buy books about the game and attempt to learn how to control the dice by reading about how it is done. This is a good first step. I recommend you read my books Forever Craps: The Five-Step Advantage Method and The Craps Underground; and Sharpshooter's book, Get the Edge at Craps.

Once you have read these books, you then must decide if controlled shooting is really for you. Since the skill is something that takes time to develop, only serious players go to the second step, which is taking a Golden Touch Craps dice control class.

States Dominator, "Taking a Golden Touch class is a big decision. It's expensive, first of all, and we instructors expect that students who take the class are deadly serious about learning how to control the dice. If you are the type who can't discipline himself to schedule practice sessions or if you're the type of gambler looking for an easy fix, dice control will be a waste of time for you. Those who are focused and serious can learn a control throw but, once again, it is not easy and it takes practice."
