Are craps box people rooting against me?

31 January 2010

Hi Frank,

I watched the DVD (Beat Craps by Controlling the Dice) and I am a believer. Still working on my technique, had some good successes though.

My question is a little hard to describe. I find myself getting nervous at the table. I seem to be sensing some kind of dynamic between the dealers and the box man. As I understand it, the box man is on salary and doesn't take tips, and if there is anyone rooting against me that would be the guy. But what's an acceptable loss for these guys? Are they really rooting against me, I mean after all, it's really not their money.

Can you explain to me what drives a box man or pit boss? And maybe explain the dynamic between the dealers and the suits?

Thanks,
David

Dear David:

All dealers and all box people are different. The majority of the dealers are friendly and professional, though a slight minority are ploppies, which means they are unfriendly, unconcerned and rude. Box people can be the same way. Most box people do not share in the dealers' tips. Yes, some box people tend to think of the casinos' money as their own personal money and are horrified if a player wins, especially a player who has some skill with the dice. Yet, you will get many box people who enjoy the game and act as if they are rooting for the players to win.

The dynamic between dealers and box people is hard to characterize since these relationships are on a one-to-one basis. If the box person is a ploppy and the dealers are friendly and professional, then the dealers are probably in a continual state of annoyance. The reverse can also be true, ploppy dealers and a professional box person.

As far as being nervous when you try to execute a controlled throw, that is typical of new and relatively new players. The more you play, the more relaxed you'll be. After awhile, you won't even notice the dealers or the box person — unless they are nasty and annoying you. If that happens, take your chips and leave for greener pastures.
