Angle for a dice throw

Dear Frank,

I have to say that I've enjoyed reading your various books and watching your GTC video. I'm also currently trying to hone my GTC throw. I do have one question and you may have answered this in the past.

In your books and videos, you indicate that the dice must take off at a 45 degree angle out of your hand. Being an engineer, I know that a 45 degree angle is a 1 to 1 slope and if your are standing at SR1 or 2 or SL1 or 2 that is approximately 8-9 ft from the back wall. If the dice are thrown at a 45 degree angle, that would mean the dice would peak at four feet before hitting the table near the back wall. That peak would mean the dice are a little above the dealers' heads.

Is that too high for a "legal" craps throw?

If you take the dice from in front of you and lift them into the air at a 45 degree angle, they will indeed be slightly over the heads of the dealers and this, as you stated, is a no-no. The stickman has to follow the dice and watch the bets on the layout and doing these two things would be impossible with a true 45-degree angle.

The 45-degree litany is actually used to get students to throw with a decent loft to their dice and not line-drive them as most will do when they first start training. The dice are probably not at an exact 45-degree angle but it is a good guideline for new throwers.
