Advice for a Novice Gambler

18 November 2007

Aloha From Hawaii, Frank,

I have questions.

I am relatively new to gambling. Mostly trying my luck with blackjack, not so much craps. I play the basic strategy and play pass + odds with buying the 6/8. I was wondering where you think the best tables are on the Strip for craps, blackjack, and baccarat. More specifically, continuous shuffle, commission only on a win and so on.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Mahalo (Thank You),
Tiny Bubbles

Dear Tiny:

Welcome to the wonderful world of casino gambling. Keep your head about you and you will be fine.

Basic strategy is the only way to play blackjack and, when you are ready, consider learning Speed Count, which is the easiest method ever developed for beating that game.

If you are playing a strictly random game of craps, I would recommend only using Pass and Come with odds. Bet the lowest on the Pass and Come and back with as much as you can afford in odds. Even a double odds game only gives the house about a one-half percent edge over you - the same edge the house will have over a basic strategy player at blackjack.

Stay away from all continuous shuffle machines at blackjack because the expected loss goes up by about 16 percent on those machines per hour. Yuck!

All Strip casinos will have the 4 and 10 buy bets ay craps with commissions being paid on wins only. These are decent bets with house edges for a $25 bet with a $1 commission coming in at about 1.3 percent. When you become a serious craps player, I recommend you get our DVD Golden Touch: Beat Craps by Controlling the Dice or take one of our classes. By the way, most of the Strip casinos have decent craps games so at this stage you can choose whichever one you like.

Most Strip blackjack games are fairly good as well, but stay away from all games with 6 to 5 payouts on blackjacks. Those are terrible games for the players.

As far as baccarat is concerned, even with about a 1.25 percent edge on the game (excluding that horrible tie bet), you must only play in the high roller rooms. The mini-baccarat will have about 150 decisions per hour, while the high roller room action will have about 30-40 decisions per hour. Bet Bank, the lowest house edge bet at baccarat, and try to play fewer hands by betting Bank only after it hits once. No Player bets at all. You can cut your losses in half this way.

I am giving you a free month on my private, members-only web site at www.goldentouchcraps.com. We have over 5,000 members on this private site and I think you will find the discussions interesting, enlightening, and entertaining.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
