A Roulette Question and Answer23 November 2021
FRANK RESPONDS: Nothing of the kind. The casinos don’t have to cheat since they have structured the payouts of their games to favor them. In roulette on the 0 and 00 game, which is called the American game, there are 38 pockets in which the ball can land. If the game were fair, meaning neither the player nor the casinos have the edge, then a hit should pay 37 to one. The casinos cannot make a profit if their games are fair so they pay back 35 to one in the American game of roulette instead of 37 to one. That is not cheating. It is on the up-and-up that the casinos are doing this in order to get their edge. Now you are looking at a scoreboard that shows 20 numbers of the 38 possible numbers. That’s more than half of the numbers at the game. To make this simple, let us take 20 numbers in order 1-20 and these are appearing on the scoreboard right now. The other 18 numbers 21-36 + 0 and 00 are not on the scoreboard. Okay, now we spin the wheel and wait for the ball to land. It is more than a 50-50 chance that the number that lands will be in the 1-20 group. Let us say that the spin doesn’t double up a number because it comes from the 18-numbr grouping.. So, we spin again. It is again more than a 50-50 chance that a number will come from the group of 20 numbers. There you can see why we get numbers doubling and sometimes tripling up on the scoreboard. Let me stretch you just a little bit here. It doesn’t matter what 20 numbers are in the 20 grouping and it doesn’t matter which numbers are in the 18 grouping; it is usually a more than 50-50 chance that a number in the 20 grouping will appear. It doesn’t matter that not every one that hits from the 20-number grouping is not a double-up, the contest is close and you will therefore see numbers repeat often enough that they are quite noticeable. One more little stretch: If the number in the 18 grouping hits, now the 18 grouping has a new number in the group because a 20-grouping number leaves that list and the 20=grouping also has a new number in its group from the 18-number grouping. Yes, yes, one more stretch: Once a number is doubled within the 20 group, there are now only 19 different numbers in that group so another doubling will be slightly more difficult. And there you have why you see doublings and some triplings of numbers on the scoreboard. All the best in and out of the casinos! Frank Scoblete’s web site is www.frankscoblete.com.
