Happy Holidays

27 December 2000

Well, another year has gone by, and it is time for my annual tribute to Clement Moore's immortal poem, "The Night Before Christmas." With my apologies to Mr. Moore, here are some not so serious reflections on gaming in Michigan.

Twas two nights after Christmas and to my surprise,

My wife said "lets go to a casino," with a gleam in her eye.

We hopped in the car, our meager wallets in tow,

and drove through ten-foot tunnels of snow.

We headed to MotorCity and found ample parking,

a terrific buffet, but not a single stocking.

We saw new slot machines and all the new trends,

listened to some good music and hung out with some friends.

From there we went to MGM and had a grand time,

Ordered a rum and a coke with a twist of sweet lime.

We laughed and looked on with envy, as people won money.

We looked at our own wallets, and thought "this is not funny."

We went off to Greektown, to try out our luck.

Real early on, hit an ATM machine for big bucks.

We enjoyed the music and all our favorite games,

underneath the high ceilings, and five-foot imitation flames.

The night quickly passed, in a wink of an eye, as quick as our limited money supply.

Through the crowds we meandered, on our new chosen mission,

got into our car, and started the ignition.

As we drove through the streets of the city we knew,

that Detroit nightlife had changed as a result of casinos' debut.

In the distance we saw Mayor Archer, with a smile on his face,

excited by the new excitement in this place.

And we heard him exclaim, as we drove out of sight,

"The Superbowl is coming to Motown - all right!"
