Carol writes, "Please don't think this question stupid, but I've recently been introduced to my very own casino host. He's done so much for me, but as a "newbie", I'm not sure of the proper way to thank him. Can you give me some advice, or steer me in the right direction?" Good question. Most casinos don't allow hosts to accept money. ... (read more)

I like to play good old-fashioned poker. Where can I find a good poker game? I wouldn't suggest playing in a casino poker room, mainly because you don't know who you're playing against. A lot of people make a living at this game, and in fact one ... (read more)

I like to play blackjack, but I can't find a low-stake table. Why don't the casinos have any $2 tables? It's almost impossible to bet less than $5 on the Strip, but you can still find $2 tables in downtown Las Vegas and in some neighborhood casinos. If ... (read more)

How do I mark my keno ticket? Blank tickets and crayons are supplied by the casino. Your ticket will not be accepted if you use ink, pencils, scorpion venom, or bat's blood. ... (read more)
By All Means, Ask Barney!27 May 2002
It seems like ages since I last saw a new Barney Vinson book on the shelves. For those of you who are unaware of the name, Barney Vinson is the author of several of the best books I've ever read on casinos, including Chip-Wrecked in Las Vegas, Casino Secrets and Las Vegas Behind the Tables. But for the last half dozen years or so, it's been all quiet on the Vinson front. ... (read more)

Why do people keep score while playing baccarat? They're tracking the hands, in hopes they may spot some pattern in the way the cards are falling. Remember, though, that eight decks of cards are used in baccarat. Consequently, each hand is independent of all the others. Baccarat is strictly a guessing game, and keeping score isn't going to change anything. ... (read more)
April 34, 2093 -- A Vegas Odyssey14 April 2002
The old man shuffled out to the front solarium as a bright sun burned
through the afternoon smog. Settling into his hydro-lounger, he looked
at the date on his wrist computer. It was the 34th of April already.
Summer would be here in a few more weeks, and he hadn't even ... (read more)
Casino Gambling Success Promotes Expansion6 March 2002
In the past 10 years, without a lot of fanfare, casino gambling has expanded far beyond Las Vegas and Atlantic City. The addition of many modest casinos to the national landscape over the last decade has illustrated just how popular this particular form of entertainment has become. It began with a small, ... What makes Las Vegas run? Is it greed? Everybody wants something for nothing, and gambling is a good way to get it. Or is it something else, something called juice. We secretly put a tap on the telephone of one casino boss, and here's a transcript of his conversations: Rrring! "Las Vegas ... (read more)
