Bumping up Passline Bets

24 March 2005

Dear AP:

In a book by John Brokopp (Thrifty Gambling with foreword by Frank Scoblete), he states: "in a 2x game with a $5 pass line bet, if a 6 is rolled you are allowed to add one dollar to passline bet and take $20 in odds." Is this true? If so, can it also be used for all point numbers?

Also, in a earlier letter to Frank I asked, "When casinos comp an apple martini at the table (cost of booze $1), do they expense retail ($6 at bar) and in reality turn a profit on comps?"

Thanks,
J88

Dear J88:

Different casinos have different rules, but what Brokopp wrote is correct at some casinos. Many casinos will allow you to go to $15 on the $6 Pass Line bet. On the 5 and 9, the $6 bet would not bump up the odds to $20 because you can get the correct payout on a $12 odds bet - the same holds true for the 4 and 10. Of course, it's best to make sure and ask the casinos you play in what they will allow. As I said, each casino is different.

Your second question is hard to answer. I think the expense is simply for the booze and no added charges are put on paper. But I could be wrong as I am not a tax expert or accountant.

All the best in and out of the casinos!

A.P.
