Top-10 comedians' take on gambling

29 October 2012

Gambling can bring about a myriad of emotions, from exhilaration to depression. But the experience can also, with the right comic treatment, be downright hilarious.

Some comics have their finger on the pulse of gamblers, and here are the top-10 comic routines on gambling.

10. Daniel Tosh: Poker is a sport?
Daniel Tosh isn't for everyone, as demonstrated by the politically incorrect statements he makes early in this video. But his take on poker as a sport (which comes at the 2:50 mark) is classic. Fair warning: There is plenty of not-safe-for-work language on this one.

9. Matt Kazam on Keno and slot machines
I'd never heard of Kazam prior to researching this list, but I love his lead-in to this bit on gambling, especially the part about the seats available for Keno players.

8. Pat Barker: Losing at poker vs. losing on slots
Barker is another comic whom I was unfamiliar with, but his description of the stories poker players tell when they lose are spot on.

7. Steve Martin on Internet poker
The first of two David Letterman appearances on the list, comic legend Steve Martin relates his experience playing online poker in the wee hours of the morning.

6. Kathy Griffin, the nickel slots fiend
Kathy Griffin sums up her experience with slot machines in this not-so-politically-correct routine on George Lopez's talk show.

5. Louis C.K. plays blackjack in Atlantic City
If you've never listened to the Opie and Anthony show, be aware that it is incredibly offensive. And this conversation between Opie, Anthony and Louis C.K. is offensive to almost everyone, from gamblers to the people who work at the casino. But it's still incredibly funny.

4. Bill Cosby on the transformational nature of craps
One of the all-time great stand-up comics, Bill Cosby really taps into how the rush of gambling can transform personalities with this description of a businessman at the craps table.

3. Norm Macdonald handicaps baseball … and loses on boxing
This interview with David Letterman is priceless Macdonald. And I know my old Casino City colleague Dan Igo joins me in wishing that Sports Show with Norm Macdonald were still on the air.

2. Artie Lange likes betting on the New York Giants
This routine is definitely not safe for work, but as a fellow New York Giants fan, I feel Lange's pain, even though I very rarely have money on the game. And if you watched yesterday's game against the Dallas Cowboys, you can certainly understand. (Worth noting: The Giants not only won, but also covered the spread yesterday. So hopefully Lange got to cash in.)

1. Mitch Hedberg is a blackjack player
The gambling material begins at 1:40 and lasts just 30 seconds, but I encourage you to watch the entire routine. Part of Hedberg's genius is how rapidly he switches from topic to topic, and his delivery is second-to-none.

Aaron Todd

Home-game hotshot Aaron Todd was an editor/writer at Casino City for nearly eight years, and is currently the Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications and Marketing at St. Lawrence University, his alma mater. While he is happy to play Texas Hold'em, he'd rather mix it up and play Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, Deuce-to-Seven Triple Draw, and Badugi.
