Washington Casinos Fund Candidate's Campaign

LA CENTER, Washington – As reported by the Longview Daily News: "Area casino owners and employees are pouring money into a campaign for a candidate running for a state representative seat.

"Richard Curtis of La Center, Republican candidate for the 18th District seat for the state House of Representatives, has received almost $10,000 in campaign contributions from casinos in La Center and one in Longview. Contributions toward the Curtis campaign total about $127,000.

"Voters will decide Tuesday whether or not to approve Initiative 892, the gambling initiative that would allow slot machines in non-Indian casinos and lower property taxes. Curtis has said he supports the initiative, while his opponent, Democrat Pam Brokaw of Vancouver, has said she opposes it. The state's 19 Indian tribal casinos have raised about $5.8 million to fight the initiative.

"…'Those just happen to be the main businesses in La Center. I've been a City Councilman for the last three years. I've worked hard to support our businesses,' Curtis said Friday. 'I take it as a compliment that those businesses donated to my campaign.'…"
