Ho-Chunk Nation sues governor

29 January 2008

WISCONSIN -- As reported by the Wisconsin State JournaL: "The Ho-Chunk Nation is suing Gov. Jim Doyle, saying he lacked the authority to negotiate perpetual gambling compacts that were later invalidated by the state's high court.

"Doyle's actions caused the tribe 'substantial harm' according to the suit, filed today in Dane County Circuit Court.

"...The state and the tribe are in dispute over $72 million the state says the tribe owes it under the compact.

"...The lawsuit does not seek monetary damages. Rather, the tribe is asking the court for a declaration that the governor was not authorized to agree to the provision and that it is unenforceable."
