Study shows many Louisiana youths are gambling1 December 2008BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- As reported by KATC: "Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes have the highest rates of youth-related gambling in all of Louisiana, says a newly released study, which also places them among the top six parishes for numbers of video-gaming sites in operation. "Its findings include statistics based on several types of surveys that indicate up to 50 percent of Houma-Thibodaux students in grades six, eight, 10 and 12 have engaged in some form of gambling. "The data on youngsters included information on activities such as gambling on cards, video machines, sports betting and bingo. "It was culled from information supplied by the children themselves, as well as information from surveys of principals. "...Overall, the study revealed that the number of gambling sites statewide has decreased since 2002, down from 2,800 locations to 2,300. However, the actual number of gambling devices has increased during the same time-frame from 37,000 machines in 2002 to 44,000 machines in 2008..." |
