Gambling Advocates Look to Florida

FLORIDA – As reported by the Cincinnati Enquirer: "If backers of casino gambling in Kentucky ever succeed in getting the issue on the statewide ballot, the key to victory may be found in Florida.

"Gambling advocates and activists there used focused and detailed ballot language, the potential of a big payoff in new state tax dollars and the local option referendum to win two key elections that will allow gambling at, among other venues, two south Florida horse tracks.

"'Casino gambling was on the ballot three times prior to 2004, and it failed all three times,' said Alan Koslow, a south Florida lawyer who was active in the campaigns to legalize casinos in Florida. 'The efforts were too aggressive and the public was not ready for it yet in south Florida or Florida in general.

"'But it was different this time,' said Koslow, who represents the owners of Pompano Park Racetrack in Broward County, one of the tracks now allowed to build a casino.

"…Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher, state lawmakers, opponents, foes and political operatives expect gambling to be a major issue in the General Assembly's 2006 legislative session…"
