Democrats defend Washingon governor's decision1 August 2008OLYMPIA, Washington -- As reported by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "Democrats in the state House and Senate joined forces Thursday to defend Gov. Chris Gregoire's controversial decision to allow a big expansion of tribal gambling while abandoning a provision that would have provided hundreds of millions of dollars in new revenue for the state. "Tribal gambling compacts have become a controversial topic in this year's gubernatorial campaign, with questions about large tribal campaign contributions to aid Gregoire's campaign and the negotiations that allowed tribal gambling expansion. "...That meeting turned into a protracted explanation of Gregoire's move to back away from a 2005 revenue-sharing agreement, along with her position that casino profits should be shared with the state. "...Democrats and tribal representatives took the opportunity to speak out about how the renegotiation process Gregoire initiated was necessary, thorough and sensible and how it produced a compact that works for the state and the tribes. "Republicans used the chance to air their skepticism about the agreements and the process..." |
