New BIA rules won't affect N.M. casino proposal28 July 2008LAS CRUCES, California -- As reported by the Silver City Sun News: "A new rule adopted by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs won't affect a casino proposal in Akela, said a spokesperson for the agency. "The rule, adopted formally in May, says casinos should be located within 25 miles of a reservation's headquarters, though it does offer exceptions. "The Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma has built a casino east of Deming, but it remains unopened because of a dispute about whether its allowed. "Also, the Jemez Pueblo of northern New Mexico has proposed a casino in Anthony. The federal government in January rejected that application through an administrative process, but it's possible the tribe could pursue another route to gain approval for the application. "Nedra Darling, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C., said the new rule doesn't impact the Fort Sill Apache Tribe or Jemez Pueblo..." |
