Oklahoma tribal casino faces opposition

OKLAHOMA -- As reported by the Edmond Sun: "A gambling casino bordering Interstate 35 is not something Edmond homeowner Lloyd Kirk wants to see near the city.

"He said the Shawnee Tribe's plan to put a $400 million casino and entertainment complex 1.7 miles away from Remington Park at Britton Road and I-35 would not only adversely affect him as a property owner, but also provide no benefit tax-wise to the state of Oklahoma.

"...Gov. Brad Henry, Sen. Jim Inhofe, Congresswoman Mary Fallin, Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and County Commissioner Ray Vaughn have publicly opposed the casino. The Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce and the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce have not taken a position on the issue.

"...The deadline was Monday for the public to formally comment to the Shawnee tribe. However, the tribe has stated there will be another period for public comment next year, said Scott Wells of Edmond, Remington Park's vice president and general manager. The project would have to be approved by the Department of the Interior through the Bureau of Indian Affairs..."
