Iowa casino proposed

LARCHWOOD, Iowa -- As reported by the Des Moines Register: "An Iowa company is talking to officials in Lyon County in the northwest corner of the state about building a $90 million casino and resort west of Larchwood.

"The idea is to draw gamblers and others from the nearby Sioux Falls metro area.

"If county residents and Iowa's gaming commission approve it, the resort would produce up to $3 million annually in tax and gaming income for the county and would create as many as 400 jobs, officials estimate.

"...Of course, it would bring a large gambling presence to the area as well. And that's where the debate is likely to fall - economic development vs. fears about increased crime and addictions.

"...Glenn Anderson, Lyon County's economic development director, said officials with Kehl Management are talking about constructing a smaller version of the $140 million resort they opened in the small town of Riverside, near Iowa City, on Aug. 31, 2006..."
