Maryland's future clouded

MARYLAND -- As reported by the Enterprise: "A judge's ruling last week in St. Mary's added one more opinion to the issue of electronic gambling machines, already addressed in an appeals court ruling, attorney general's letter and legislation awaiting the governor's signature.

"A court hearing last Friday included projections that the machines will be illegal in St. Mary's by the end of next month, except for old-fashioned pull-tab dispensers within the premises of qualifying nonprofit organizations.

"The bill to impose that ban has not yet been signed by the governor, however, and its likely effects remain unclear.

"St. Mary's Circuit Judge Karen Abrams' ruling in favor of a Charlotte Hall liquor store and two charitable organizations included her findings that a machine that prints tickets in a predetermined sequence during play is no different legally than one that dispenses tickets from a preprinted deck..."
