Rhode Island 24-hour gambling legislation clears hurdle2 May 2008WARWICK, Rhode Island -- As reported by the Warwick Beacon: "To the ire of some Warwick members, the General Assembly attempted to make the prospect of 24-hour gambling more attractive to the host communities of Lincoln and Newport with amendments that allocate additional revenues from casinos into the coffers of the municipalities. "Some Warwick legislators responded with a collective, 'Wait a second,' and were wondering why their city isn't more fairly compensated for hosting an airport. "The amendment was part of the larger bill allowing 24-hour slot parlors. It expects an additional $1.1 million in aid to Lincoln, and an additional $200,000 to Newport. The amendment also promises $14 million will go to state aid to all communities; but that amount isn't considered additional—meaning the language will have little, if any effect, on actual budgets. "The bill, as amended cleared by a 27-6 vote in the Senate and a 51-19 vote in the House, appears headed for the governor's desk for a signature or a veto. "Comments from Jeff Neal, Governor Donald Carcieri's chief spokesman, indicate the bill appears destined for a veto. "...Barring any last minute flip-flops, the House appears to have the votes to override a veto..." |
