West Virginia hotel owner wants casino10 January 2008WHEELING, West Virginia -- As reported by the Wheeling News Register: "The owner of the Rogers Hotel in downtown Wheeling said he still wants to open a 'full-blown' casino at the 14th Street building that has been under a raze or repair order for several years. "'We are going to start efforts to revamp the building in February, beginning with renovations on the first floor,' said Mark Jaber, the hotel's owner. "Jaber, a resident of Akron, purchased the structure for $3,000 from Christopher Wright of Montgomery, W.Va. in January 2005. Back then, he touted the same renovation plans, but this week noted those plans were delayed because of his other unrelated projects in Ohio. "...To open a casino at the hotel, Jaber believes he must petition the Ohio County Commission to allow the matter to be placed on a ballot for local approval, either during a special election or possibly during the upcoming May primary election. Jaber said he would foot the cost of the special election. "If Ohio County voters would approve gambling at the Rogers, Jaber believes he must then receive approval from the West Virginia Lottery Commission. He also would need approval from the state Legislature..." |
