Gulfstream opens racing season

FLORIDA -- As reported by the South Florida Business Journal: "Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino opened its racing season Thursday with a big increase in betting on its races televised at other tracks, including Calder Race Course and Pompano Park, which did not televise Gulfstream last year.

"But its revamped ground-floor casino area, with about 250 Class III Las Vegas-style machines, was not open and will not open until Saturday, at the earliest.

"Gulfstream is still testing new slot machines, mostly video poker games, and waiting for certification of them from the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering, said Bill Murphy, president and general manager of the Hallandale Beach facility. He said it hopes to open the ground-floor casino this weekend.

"Racing fans and slots players in the second-floor casino, with about 570 slot machines, dealt with Gulfstream's coldest opening racing day in recent years.

"Gulfstream did not estimate its attendance for Thursday. But it appeared to be less than the 6,700 it estimated for its 2007 opening day.

"...Racing at Gulfstream has been one of the few profitable ventures in recent years for parent Magna Entertainment (NASDAQ: MECA) of Aurora, Ontario.

"Primarily due to operating costs and revenue it has called disappointing at the Gulfstream casino, Magna's Florida operations had an $8.5 million loss before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization for the third quarter..."
