Navajo, Federal Officials Meet

13 April 2006

NEW MEXICO – As reported by the Arizona Journal: "Navajo Nation officials, including President Joe Shirley Jr., met with federal gaming officials in Albuquerque, N.M., last week to discuss the tribe's plan to build a casino near Sanders. The results of the meeting were not available by press time, but tribal officials indicated that a statement would be provided soon after the meeting.

"Communications Director George Hardeen confirmed that the president still hopes to have the casino open by August. The exact location of the casino near Sanders has not been determined, though, and certain legal requirements, such as the public posting of gaming related documents, must be completed before construction can begin.

"Hardeen noted that a revenue-sharing plan is also still in the works. The local chapter is hopeful that it will share in the proceeds from the casino.

"In order to meet the August deadline, the tribe plans to use a 'sprung structure' which can be constructed very quickly…"
