Ruling Won't Stop New Mexico Tribal Casino Plans

NEW MEXICO – As reported by the El Paso Times: "The ambitions of Jemez Pueblo officials, who are planning to build a casino in Anthony, N.M., have not been tempered by proposed legislation that would prohibit Indian Tribes from building gambling resorts off the reservation.

"Paul Chinana, tribal councilman and chairman of the Jemez Enterprise Management Board, said he hopes if any legislation becomes law that would prohibit development of off-reservation casinos, a grandfather clause would allow current plans to go forward.

"A Senate committee approved a bill last month aimed at curbing a growing trend of Indian tribes building casinos away from their reservations…"
