Michigan Casino Proposal Losing Steam18 February 2004MICHIGAN – As reported by the (Blue Water, Michigan) Times Herald: "After almost 18 months of work, congressional lawmakers are losing hope they will be able to clear the way for an Indian casino near Port Huron's Thomas Edison Inn. "Legislation to make a necessary land swap possible has failed to pass the House of Representatives or Senate the past two years. "…Under the proposed land swap, the tribe would drop its claim to about 100 acres in the Charlotte Beach area of Michigan's Upper Peninsula -- a claim that has depressed property values there about 90%. "In return, tribal members would acquire the land in Port Huron where the tribe wants to open the gaming parlor. "Joan Nutt of Port Huron agrees there's a lot of opposition to a proposed casino, but she's convinced having one near her neighborhood could mean a safer area. "…A proposed casino near the Thomas Edison Inn and the revitalization it could bring might change their attitudes. "…Other local residents want a casino in Port Huron, too. "…Casino proponents have said the facility could employ as many as 1,000 people, and would draw customers that normally would cross the Blue Water Bridge to gamble at the casino in Point Edward -- directly across the St. Clair River from where the Port Huron casino would be built…" |
