Detroit-Area Casino Holds Job Fair

DETROIT, Michigan – As reported by the Detroit Free Press: "A $350-million casino in Romulus is not a sure bet, but that didn't stop hundreds from lining up Monday for the chance to be blackjack dealers or cocktail waitresses.

"The job fair may be calculated to win support before a local vote Dec. 2. But it can't hide the fact that the plan by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians to build a casino resort along I-94 near Metro Airport faces tough opposition.

"…Tribal leaders are optimistic, and Romulus officials are salivating. But among those lining up against the casino is the Detroit City Council, some members of Congress and even some within the tribe.

"…The tribe is in the midst of political turmoil, and some members question whether it makes sense to start an expensive new project in Romulus. Aaron Payment, vice chairman of the tribe, said the tribal board was split earlier this month on a vote to spend $400,000 on its campaign in Romulus. The new casino could threaten the tribe's Detroit casino -- the Greektown Casino -- and the tribe's relationship with the Detroit City Council, he said. Payment plans to circulate petitions for a tribal referendum on the Romulus project…"
