$95 Million Takeover Bid Made for Jackpot Enterprises11 October 1999
Las Vegas Entertainment Network Inc. launched an unsolicited $95 million takeover bid Oct. 8 for Jackpot Enterprises Inc. of Las Vegas. Jackpot has been looking at alternatives in the wake of two failed acquisitions of its own. LVEN, based in Los Angeles, recently acquired slot operations in Brazil that have 1,200 machines.

The casino industry is mobilizing against a National Collegiate Athletic Association campaign to ban betting on college athletics. Frank Fahrenkopf, president of the American Gaming Association, sent a confidential memo Wednesday to his board members informing them of the NCAA's efforts to persuade Congress to remove a federal exemption that allows Nevada sports books to accept wagers on college sports.
Isle of Capri Casinos Plans to Buy Lady Luck Gaming8 October 1999
Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. said it reached an agreement to buy Lady Luck Gaming Corp. for about $258 million in cash and debt. Isle of Capri, based in Biloxi, Miss., is a major operator of riverboat casinos in Mississippi and Louisiana. The purchase of Lady Luck will give Isle of Capri two more casinos in Mississippi and its first presence in Las Vegas.

Missouri Cases Against Online Indian Lottery Return to State Courts5 October 1999
The attorney general of Missouri is claiming victory in another round of his long-running legal battle over an online lottery that had been operated by the Coeur d'Alene tribe. While the cases against the tribe are back in state courts, where Attorney General Jay Nixon wants them, the result of the latest jurisdictional spat may be less clearcut than he says. The site remains shut down, however, thanks to a separate federal ruling in Idaho.
Web Hotel Reservations Firm Sets Up Shop in Las Vegas5 October 1999
Hotelguide.com is concentrating its reservation and information Web site on lodging. The site began operating late in September and plans mass distribution of free CD-ROMs. It's also affiliated with TravelSwitch, a new company that will specialize in Las Vegas reservations, group sales and convention business.
Park Place Criticized, But Escapes Fine for Payments to Politician4 October 1999
The New Jersey Casino Control Commission declined to levy any fines
against Park Place Entertainment Corp. of Las Vegas for payments made
to the former speaker of the Florida House in 1994. The commission
chastised Park Place Chief Executive Arthur Goldberg for his decisions
in the incident.
Face-recognition ID System Marketed to Casino Security Departments4 October 1999
The Bastille, a new Internet-based security application developed
by GTE Law Enforcement Services, recognizes criminals by what the
company terms "facial geometry" or bone structure; hiding behind a
beard and glasses won't be sufficient to fool the electronic eye. The
idea is to quickly match a face in the crowd against a database of
known criminals.
Bungee Jumping Resumes at Stratosphere2 October 1999
Two Californian television producers won a court order Sept. 29
that allows them to complete filming of a bungee-jumping competition
off the Stratosphere hotel-casino tower. A Stratosphere official said
the event resumed Wednesday after the hotel-casino cancelled the
competition on Tuesday afternoon because of concerns about wind
conditions.
Pure Commerce Says Casinos Can Trade in Over 1502 October 1999
The Australian company announced that its Pure Global Pay service
will permit online casinos to process Internet transactions in any
currency, deposit funds into any bank around the world and receive
merchant status. The company has a strategic partnership with IBM.

Proposed Anti-Money Llaundering Rules Worry Gaming Companies29 September 1999
The U.S. Treasury Department announced Sept. 23 a new anti-money
laundering strategy that could potentially place casinos under the
strict transaction reporting requirements now applied to banks.
Fahrenkopf says requirements for banks shouldn't be applied to
casinos.
Scientific Games and MDI Entertainment Announce Strategic Alliance29 September 1999
Scientific Games International announced a strategic alliance with
MDI Entertainment that allows Scientific Games to offer its lottery
customers games and promotions based on such licensed MDI properties as
Dick Clark's American Bandstand, Star Trek and Betty Boop. Scientific
Games will also invest in MDI.
Harrah's to Show Gaming in Ads, Thanks to Supreme Court Ruling28 September 1999
Harrah's Entertainment said that for the first time in the
company's 60-plus year history, it will run a nationwide television
advertisement that shows customers gambling. The Federal Communications
Commission had previously banned television ads depicting gambling, but
the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that the government ban violated
the right to free speech guaranteed under the Constitution.
IRL is MIA with Race Fans27 September 1999
Despite exciting wheel-to-wheel racing, the Indy Racing League
series is struggling for acceptance. Part of the problem, though, may
be one of perception. People see NASCAR filling 150,000-seat speedways
for its Winston Cup events and assume the IRL is failing because it is
drawing "only" an average of 30,000 to most of its events. Sunday's
Vegas.com 500 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is likely to draw a crowd of
about 40,000 to the 107,000-seat facility.
Harrah's Calls its Indy-car Sponsorship 'A No-brainer'27 September 1999

during the fourth running of the Indy Racing League Vegas.com 500
Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. None more so than Harrah's

Park Place Exec Reassures Las Vegas Hilton Workers27 September 1999
Las Vegas Hilton employees worried about job security at the
3,200-room hotel-casino received assurances Thursday from Park Place
Entertainment Inc. President Arthur Goldberg that no sale is imminent.
The Las Vegas Sun reported Wednesday that potential acquisitors are
interested in the Hilton and that Park Place might be willing to sell
at the right price.
