Efforts in Congress to crack down on "cybersquatting" should be welcome on the Strip, where virtually every casino has had its name appropriated on the Internet. From a Las Vegas marketing firm to online casino operators based in the Caribbean, companies have registered unauthorized "dot com'' variations of the names of major casinos.
 

Starnet Signs Letter of Intent to Sell Adult Entertainment Business

Although Nevada and Mississippi approved the deal, some regulators are concerned about Park Place dominating casino markets.
 

Autotote Receives Additional Terminal Order for Betting Network in Italy

Autotote Corp. said it has received a $7.5 million add-on order for the Max3000, Max3000L and self-service Stan terminals for the start-up of a new sports betting network in Italy called Totoscemese. The government is licensing 1,000 betting shops.

A veteran gaming analyst shuffled his ratings on the stock of two big Las Vegas-based gaming companies Tuesday, upgrading Mandalay Resort Group and downgrading Park Place Entertainment.
 

Park Place Earnings Rise; Goldberg Takes Shots at Wynn

Park Place Entertainment Corp. reported a 35.7 percent gain in third-quarter per-share net income before one-time expenses related to the opening of its Paris Las Vegas resort. The company's chairman, Arthur Goldberg, also lobbed a few thinly veiled shots at Steve Wynn and made controversial comments about a possible stake in the Aladdin project.
 

Casino Lobbyist Fahrenkopf Warns NCAA over Betting Ban

No Action on Internet Gaming Bill Seen Until 2000

A U.S. House of Representatives version of legislation banning Internet gambling was introduced Thursday (Oct. 21), but industry observers doubt anything will happen on the issue until next year. The bill is sister legislation to a Senate bill co-sponsored by Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., and Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev.
 

Investors in LVEN Were Not Warned of Federal Investigation

Federal authorities were investigating the financial "savior" of Las Vegas Entertainment Network Inc. for months before that company's stock underwent a rapid -- and temporary -- price run-up fueled by news that he was "investing" $495 million in the company. Despite swirling questions about the nature of the investment, though, the authorities didn't halt trading in LVEN shares until after unwitting investors had seen the value of the investments plunge.
 

Government of Liberia Plans to Offer Lottery, Other Games on Net

The Republic of Liberia said its Gaming Board is issuing a request for proposal for vendors to help it become one of the first national governments to run an online lottery and other games of chance. A government statement said the North African country wants to see international cooperation and reciprocity in providing well-regulated, government-run Internet gaming products.
 

Sports Books Not Likely to Agree on Banning Bets on NBA Games

Bill Bible, a former gaming regulator and the new president of the casino industry's political arm, said Nevada sports books probably won't be able to form a united stand on whether to ban betting on NBA games. NBA Commissioner David Stern recently told Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman that Nevada sports books would have to voluntarily ban betting on NBA games before his organization would even consider granting Las Vegas a franchise.
 

Starnet Gets an Injunction Lifted, But Funds Still Frozen

Starnet Communications won a psychological victory in its feud with Las Vegas Casino when a Canadian judge lifted an injunction that restricted Starnet's use of assets. But the company still has $6.7 million in assets frozen by Canadian authorities. It's also been sued by a New York law firm, which says Starnet mislead people who bought its stock.
 

Harrah's Entertainment Listed in Top 500 Most Innovative Companies

InformationWeek magazine, an information technology publication, has named Harrah's Entertainment as one of the "Top 500 Most Innovative Companies." Harrah's said it is the only casino company to be named on this list that considered "the nation's largest and most innovative users of IT."
 

Lewis Not Ruling Out a Bout against Tyson

While his focus is riveted on Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis admits a fight with Mike Tyson could be in his future. In a conference call last week, Lewis said, "Tyson is the only other boxer I see (fighting in the future) right now." First, Lewis has to get past Holyfield in a Nov. 13 bout in Las Vegas.
 

Youbet.com Officials Refuse to Discuss Raid by Los Angeles Police

Officials at Youbet.com Inc. are refusing to discuss details of a raid Thursday by the Los Angeles Police Department's vice squad. The company made only a brief statement saying that it believes its activities are legal and that it is cooperating with authorities. Youbet.com operates a subscription-based service that transmits horse races, with links to its "wagering partners."
