Worries Over South Africa Slot Plan22 May 2003SOUTH AFRICA – As reported by the Cape Times: "The move to install three thousand slot machines throughout the Western Cape could spell disaster with millions in government social grants disappearing down a hole in the mostly vain hope of striking it lucky. "This was spelled out by social services and poverty alleviation MEC Marius Fransman, who has slammed the planned roll-out by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board as `jeopardising attempts to stamp out the extreme poverty in this province'. "…`Poor people are being bused to casinos to play out their money,' he said. `The human and social cost (of the slot machines) is too harsh.' "…Fransman announced an independent survey to determine the impact of gambling on the beneficiaries of social grants. "…The survey, to be conducted by Stellenbosch University's Datadesk, will focus on 12 magisterial districts and is expected to take about four months…" |
