Wisconsin Compact Allows Slots at Stores

29 April 2003

WISCONSIN -- As reported by the Wisconsin State Journal: "Besides seeking to force a vote on whether to allow gambling in Dane County, the state's newly signed compact with the Ho-Chunk Nation allows the tribe to offer gambling at convenience stores in Monroe and Shawano counties.

"Under existing compacts, the tribe already could offer limited casino-style games at two such stores, called `ancillary facilities,' in Jackson County and one in Sauk County, although it never did.

"But tribal spokesman Mark Butterfield said Monday the tribe likely would set up two such facilities under the new compact: the Whitetail Crossing Phillips 66 on Highway 21 east of Tomah in Monroe County, and the Ho-Chunk North Amoco at the intersection of Highway 29 and 45 in Wittenberg in Shawano County.

"Both sites are on tribal land and likely would contain only slot machines, Butterfield said.

"...The compact defines an ancillary facility as a place where at least 50 percent of the area is dedicated to a business purpose other than gambling..."
