Will Temple Coach John Chaney be Coaching Temple at the Start of the 2005-06 Season?

14 March 2005

COSTA RICA -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- The winds are already swirling big time in Philly. John Chaney, head basketball coach at Temple and one of the legends of the game, is in a lot of trouble. During a game last week against St. Josephs, Chaney, who was unhappy with the referees not calling fouls on what he felt were rough plays, sent in seldom-used big man, Nehemiah Ingram, to send a "message." Chaney even called Ingram a "goon," and after Ingram went in, Hawks senior John Bryant broke his arm in a fall following a hard foul by Ingram.

Chaney immediately suspended himself for three games, and then for the entire Atlantic 10 postseason tournament, where St. Joe's and Temple could meet again next week. Many fans and administrators feel that the self-imposed suspension is not enough and that the time has come for Chaney to retire. That most likely won't happen, but if the University and its board of regents put pressure on Chaney, he might not have a choice.

"This is definitely an embarrassing situation for one of the greatest coaches of all time," said Wagerweb.com CEO Dave Johnson. "The real question is, will this tarnish his legacy forever, and will he ever be able to rebound from this incident. We have already received a lot of wagers supporting Chaney and betting that he will be back next season."
