West Harbors Most Casino Gamblers, Annual Survey Says

LAS VEGAS -- As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: `` Westerners are the most frequent casino customers in the United States and slightly more prefer tables games versus slot machines than players in other regions of the country.

``That's according to a new survey of more than 16,000 gamblers commissioned by Harrah's Entertainment Inc.

``The survey, conducted in 2002 by NFO WorldGroup, also confirmed the age-old tendency of men playing table games more often than women, although two-thirds of males still prefer machines to tables.

``The Harrah's study said that 35 percent of respondents from 12 Western states — including casino-rich Nevada and California — were reported to have wagered in a casino. The North Central region — where every state but Ohio has Indian casinos — was next with a 29 percent participation rate, then the Northeast with 27 percent and South at 19 percent.

``Further, 70 percent of Westerners prefer slots, compared with 77 percent in the North Central, 76 percent in the South and 74 in the Northeast. Fifteen percent of Western players said they liked table games more, compared with14 percent in the Northeast, 13 percent in the South and 12 percent in the North Central.

``…Of the male gamblers polled, 20 percent said they wagered on the tables most often, with only 8 percent of women agreeing. Eighty-one percent of women and 67 percent of men said they'd rather play the slots…"
