Washington Tribe to Open Second Casino12 July 2002WASHINGTON – As reported by the (Tacoma, Washington) News Tribune: "Starting Saturday, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians will be the first tribe in Washington state to operate two casinos. "The tribe has finished a $2.5 million remodel of the former Bingo Palace near tribal headquarters in East Tacoma and has stocked it with 450 electronic gaming machines. "Thanks to a recent change in policy by the Washington State Gambling Commission, the tribe will be able to operate the new facility, as well as the Emerald Queen riverboat casino on the Blair Waterway. The new casino, which will open Saturday at 10 a.m., will have no table games, instead devoting its gaming space to machines. "The Puyallups already have 1,050 gaming machines at the Emerald Queen and will boost the number at the new casino to 650 shortly after opening, according to Emerald Queen manager Frank Wright, who will also run the new casino. "State law prohibits nontribal casinos from operating gaming machines, which are by far the most profitable attractions in casino gaming. "…Wright said the new facility will stay open just two years, then be torn down. The tribe plans to excavate the site and build a small lake, which will be part of a $200 million hotel-casino complex the tribe intends to build in that area. "That casino is scheduled to open in September 2004…" |
